Patriots Sign Kick Return Specialist Leon Washington

Bill seems to just love guys who can return kicks: Wes Welker, Danny Woodhead, Jeff Demps, Devin McCourty, etc. This time he went out and got a 2-time Pro Bowl, 3-time All-Pro Kick Return Specialist. Washington currently holds the NFL record for most kickoff returns for a touchdown with eight, a record he shares with Browns free agent Wide Reciever Josh Cribbs. With recently acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin being an impressive kick returner, Washington was an easy cut for the Seahawks. Washington adds some depth at Running Back in addition to his kick returning abilities, but his notoriety has come from his kick returning. Even when Washington isn't getting touchdowns from his kick returns he is a productive return man. Last season he was second in the NFL in average return yards with 29.0. It's a subtle move, but ultimately a nice improvement. Welker is gone, Woodhead is an unsigned free agent, Jeff Demps wants to split time between football and his track career (Demps won the silver medal in the 2012 Olympics) and McCourty is a full time safety. The figures of the contract aren't public right now, but it's reportedly a 1-year deal and he was halfway through a 4-year deal with Seattle where he was making $12.5 Million over the life of the contract.
